Pregnancy milestones

Pregnancy milestones in PregnancyPal are the small and large markers along your pregnancy timeline — trimester transitions, the anatomy scan window, viability week, the glucose-tolerance window, full-term, and your due date — surfaced as calm celebrations and gentle reminders rather than alarms.

Pregnancy is long. Forty weeks is enough time for the calendar to start to blur. Milestones break the timeline into landmarks so you always know roughly where you are without having to calculate it. PregnancyPal's milestone strip lives on the dashboard, sends optional reminders before each one, and lets you read the educational context behind every entry.

What you can do with milestones

  • See past, current, and upcoming milestones in a horizontal strip on the dashboard.
  • Get reminders in the days leading up to a milestone (reminder timing is configurable per type).
  • Read what each milestone means — short, plain-language explanations with citations to professional bodies where appropriate.
  • Acknowledge a milestone when it's relevant ("I had my anatomy scan today") and PregnancyPal logs it.
  • Hide any milestone type you don't want to see (some people prefer not to think about week 24 viability content, for example).

How milestones work

  1. Anchor: The milestone schedule is derived from your LMP or EDD. When you change either, the schedule recalculates.
  2. Source: The default schedule is built around the obstetric milestones most pregnancies share — trimester transitions (week 13, week 28), the routine anatomy scan window (~weeks 18–22), viability (week 24), glucose tolerance (~weeks 24–28), full-term (week 37), due date (week 40), and post-term flag (week 41+).
  3. Trigger: A milestone activates on the dashboard strip about a week before its window opens.
  4. Reminder: If you've opted in to milestone notifications, a push notification fires the morning the window opens.
  5. Acknowledge: Tap a milestone and you can mark it as completed. PregnancyPal records the date and dismisses it from the active strip.
  6. Edit: Each milestone type has a settings entry — you can mute reminders, change reminder lead time, or hide the entry entirely.

Examples

  • Anatomy scan reminder — At week 17 you see "Anatomy scan window opens next week" on the strip. At week 18 a notification reminds you to schedule it if you haven't. After the appointment, you tap "Mark complete" and add a note ("scheduled for week 20").
  • Viability content opt-out — You prefer to skip viability-related reading. Settings → Milestones → "Viability week" → set visibility to off. PregnancyPal still tracks it internally but doesn't show it.
  • Trimester transition — At week 13 the dashboard shows a soft celebration card: "Welcome to the second trimester." Tapping it reveals what changes (energy, common symptoms, what to discuss at your next visit).

Tips

  • Acknowledge milestones as they happen. A complete history is useful to have if you ever need to recall when an appointment was, or share with another provider.
  • Reminder lead times are per-type. A 24-hour reminder for an anatomy-scan window is fine; a 1-week lead-up reminder for full-term might be more helpful.
  • Don't worry if a milestone window passes without action. Many milestones are content-only — there's nothing to "do" beyond reading.
  • Custom milestones (your provider scheduled a specific scan or test) can be added through the appointments feature instead of milestones; appointments are flexible, milestones are standard.

Frequently asked questions

What milestones does PregnancyPal track by default?

The standard set: end-of-first-trimester (week 13), end-of-second-trimester / start-of-third (week 28), routine anatomy scan window (weeks 18–22), viability (week 24), glucose tolerance (weeks 24–28), Tdap vaccination window (typically week 27–36), full-term (week 37), due date (week 40), and post-term flag (week 41). Twin pregnancies see additional milestones for higher-frequency monitoring.

Are these medical recommendations?

No. They're educational reference points based on what most pregnancies experience. Specific timing of scans, tests, and vaccinations is between you and your provider — PregnancyPal does not prescribe any of them. The dates and windows match what national bodies (ACOG in the US, NICE in the UK) publish, but your provider's plan is the authoritative one.

Can I add my own custom milestones?

Custom personal milestones (first ultrasound, gender-reveal, baby shower) can be added as appointments — appointments accept any title, date, and notes. The milestone strip itself is curated to obstetric standards so it stays useful as a reference.

Why do I see different milestones than my friend?

Because the milestone strip respects your settings — if you've muted certain types, they won't show. Twin pregnancies see different milestones than singleton pregnancies. Pre-pregnancy mode shows cycle and ovulation milestones instead of pregnancy ones.

What happens if I miss a milestone window?

Nothing breaks. Most milestones are content-only — they describe what is typically happening or being discussed. If a milestone has an associated appointment (like the anatomy scan), the Appointments feature is the right place to track its actual date.

Does PregnancyPal celebrate milestones?

Gently. Trimester transitions and the due date get a small dashboard card with a calm note ("Welcome to the second trimester"). There are no animations, no confetti by default, no notifications you didn't ask for. The tone is "marker passed", not "achievement unlocked".

Can I see all milestones at once instead of just upcoming ones?

Yes. Tap the milestone strip on the dashboard to expand a full view that lists every default milestone with its window, completion status, and notes. You can also export this list as part of the health-data PDF.

What this feature does NOT do

  • Diagnose based on milestone timing. Hitting or missing a milestone is informational only.
  • Replace your provider's care plan. Your provider's specific scan, test, and visit schedule overrides the generic milestones here.
  • Schedule appointments for you. Milestones are reminders to do the scheduling — see Appointments for the actual scheduling tool.
  • Track every individual obstetric test. PregnancyPal includes the most commonly experienced milestones; specialized tests (e.g., NIPT, amniocentesis) are tracked through Appointments.
