Appointment reminders

Appointment reminders in PregnancyPal are optional nudges before a prenatal visit — you pick how many hours before to be reminded and a delivery method (push, email, or SMS). Push on a mobile device is the reliable channel; email and SMS delivery is not guaranteed, especially on the web. Reminders are a convenience, not a guarantee that you'll be alerted.

It's easy to lose track of a visit in a busy week. A reminder gives you a heads-up so you can plan around it. PregnancyPal lets you switch a reminder on per appointment and choose when and how it reaches you.

Be realistic about delivery. The dependable path is push notifications on your phone, sent through the app's push service (OneSignal). Email and SMS are offered as options, but they can fail to arrive — so never rely on them as your only safety net for an important appointment. The safest habit is to use a mobile push reminder and still keep the visit in your own calendar.

What you can do with reminders

  • Turn a reminder on or off for each appointment with a toggle.
  • Choose the lead time — how many hours before the visit to be reminded.
  • Pick a method — push, email, or SMS.
  • Combine reminders with the appointment's status badge ("Today," "In X days," "Overdue") for an at-a-glance view.

How to set a reminder

  1. Open appointments: Dashboard → Appointments.
  2. Add or edit an appointment and find the Reminder toggle in the dialog.
  3. Toggle the reminder on.
  4. Set the time — the number of hours before the appointment you want the nudge.
  5. Choose the method from the dropdown — push, email, or SMS.
  6. Save the appointment.
  7. For dependable delivery, install the mobile app and allow notifications so push reminders work.

Examples

  • Day-before push — For your "20-week scan," you set the reminder to 24 hours before and choose push. Your phone nudges you the day before so you can arrange the time off.
  • Morning-of nudge — For a routine checkup, you set 3 hours before with push, giving you time to get ready and travel.
  • Email as a backup only — You pick email for a class, knowing it might not arrive, and still write the date in your own calendar as a backup.

Tips

  • Prefer push on mobile. It's the reliable channel — install the app and allow notifications.
  • Don't rely on email or SMS alone. Treat them as a bonus, not a guarantee, and especially not on the web.
  • Set the lead time you actually need. If you travel far, a 24-hour reminder beats a 1-hour one.
  • Add a personal calendar entry too for important visits like scans or specialist appointments.
  • Check your notification settings if push reminders aren't arriving — see notification preferences.
  • Re-set the reminder after rescheduling so it points at the new date and time.

Frequently asked questions

Which reminder method is most reliable?

Push notifications on the mobile app. They're delivered through OneSignal on your device. Email and SMS are offered but not guaranteed to arrive.

Why might email or SMS not reach me?

Delivery depends on factors outside the app — filters, carrier issues, and platform limits. On the web especially, email and SMS reminders may not be delivered, so don't depend on them.

Do reminders work on the web?

Reminders are stored either way, but the reliable delivery channel is push on the mobile app. On the web, treat reminders as a soft backup at best.

How far ahead can I be reminded?

You set the lead time in hours before the appointment. Pick whatever gives you enough notice — a day ahead, a few hours, or however you plan.

Will I get a reminder if I'm offline?

Push relies on a network connection to reach your device. If you're offline at the scheduled send time, delivery can be delayed or missed.

Does turning on a reminder change my appointment?

No. The reminder is just a nudge tied to the appointment. The appointment details stay the same.

What if I miss a reminder?

The appointment's status badge still shows "Today" or "Overdue" in your list. Always keep your own backup for visits you can't miss.

Can I have different methods for different appointments?

Yes. Each appointment has its own reminder settings, so you can use push for an important scan and a different method for a low-stakes class. Choose per appointment when you add or edit it.

Do reminders cost anything?

No. Reminders are part of the app. Just remember that delivery — especially email and SMS — can still fail for reasons outside the app's control.

What this feature does NOT do

  • Does not guarantee delivery of any reminder, especially email and SMS.
  • Does not reliably deliver email or SMS on the web — push on mobile is the dependable channel.
  • Does not diagnose, treat, or predict anything about your pregnancy.
  • Does not contact your provider or confirm your appointment.
  • Does not replace your own calendar for important, can't-miss visits.

Appointment reminders are a convenience, not a guarantee. Delivery can fail, so never depend on them alone for time-sensitive prenatal care. Always keep your own backup and follow your healthcare provider's instructions — this app is not a substitute for professional care.
